Cybercriminals Prey On Epsilon Data Breach Victims

In the wake of the massive Epsilon data breach, as expected, cybercriminals have come out to play in the hopes of luring victims into coughing up even more personal information. Crafty scammers have already created a fake Epsilon website with the intent to exploit victims concerned about their information being exposed. Security company Websense reported the fake web page has a “very professional look and feel” and “uses convincing social engineering techniques to lure victims.” The scammers even include Epsilon’s HTML code and has embedded it within the fake page in order to emulate Epsilon’s website look from their original press release, making the clone appear more authentic and convincing. The difference, however, is the page has been adapted to include malicious malware that visitors are being encouraged to download to obtain a new update on the data breach. The text indicates additional personally identification has been breached, and the lure is for concerned consumers to download the “Epsilon Secure Connect Tool” to see if their information was a part of the additional compromise. The tool is not legitimate and is an .exe file and has been identified as a Trojan. Those affected should be wary and do not click links they may receive in e-mail as they could be phishing attempts. Matt Liebowitz,Security News Daily, reported “Users who are worried they’ve become victims of the security breach may want to open the file, but doing so automatically installs a Trojan on your system, which can then be used to run malicious code or gain access to your personal information.” This breach, which occurred on March 30, exposed names and e-mail data from over 50 major retailers, and has affected possibly millions of people. Consumers sharing their names and e-mail addresses with popular companies such as Target, Best Buy, Walgreens, TiVo, Capital One, and Kroger, to name a few, are now prime targets for phishing scams (a more fuller list can be found at the Washington Post). Additionally, at this time many feel the breach has not been fully disclosed. Many experts and interested parties have pointed out signs that perhaps more personally identifiable information has been lost but has not yet been publicized. As the investigation unfolds, there is a possibility of victims learning more than their names and e-mail addresses have been released which could create an entire new set of problems.
